EBA Grants Flexibility to Strong Customer Authentication Deadline
The European Banking Authority (EBA) have announced its support for an extension to the deadline for Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). If adopted by National Authorities, merchants in those countries will have more time to prepare for SCA and ensure that the potential checkout chaos it could have caused – an estimated €68 billion in cart abandonment and failed transactions – is avoided.

CMSPI has been a vocal supporter of a delay to the SCA deadline, working with merchants, merchant advocates, and trade bodies across Europe to ensure our clients and the wider merchant community are informed and implementing optimal strategies.

This potential for a delay is a step in the right direction for a smooth implementation of SCA.
We hope that this extra time will allow the payments supply chain to fulfil their obligations under PSD2, and therefore allows merchants to test and adjust solutions prior to the new deadline. We will be sure to communicate further information and analysis in due course.
